Teamwork and Collaboration

A company is made of teams of people working together. Without great teamwork and collaboration, it is impossible to become an extraordinary company.

Some criteria have to be met for people to work collaboratively together as a team:
  • There needs to be a common purpose and vision that bonds people together and inspires them to do what it takes to realise the vision
  • There is an understanding among all the members of the team, of each other’s individual needs to be achieved
  • There is a realisation that for one of the team members to succeed, all the team members have to succeed together – a ‘win, win, win’ for all
  • Team members are emotionally resilient and have emotional mastery
  • Team members agree to leave their ego aside, so that robust discussions of differing viewpoints and ideas can be shared openly, without feeling defensive
  • A desire to have fun working together, inspiring each other to do a bit better than what was done by another previously, so that everyone grows by standing on the shoulders of giants (team members)
  • Have understanding and compassion when unexpected situations arise
  • Willingness to own the whole project rather than just an individual part, so willing to help wherever possible to move the project forward
  • Ability to harmoniously handle conflicts of priorities and agendas across all team members
  • If staff do not work harmoniously as a team and collaborate for the greater good of the company, communication problems will arise

When working with teams, respect for one another is critical.

If respect is missing, the following outcomes can occur:
  • Bullying
  • Gossiping
  • Rude behaviour
  • Put people down
  • Excluding people
  • Mistreat others
  • Poor customer service
  • Poor communication
  • Lack of teamwork and collaboration
  • Ineffective leadership and management
  • Unhappy, disengaged staff
  • Rise in absenteeism
  • High staff turnover
  • Difficulty recruiting the best talent
